This congregation was
initiated as a mission from the First African Baptist Church of
Covington, Kentucky in 1869. Moving from place to place for
its regular Sunday worship until 1905 we settled at 231 East Ninth
Street. This location was the former site of the St. James
A.M.E. Church. Once purchase, the name was adopted as the
Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church.
The current structure was
built in 1921, renovated in 1962 and added to in 1988. This
site has served a host of events in recent years including community
and city meeting for providing information to the public.
Candidates for political office have found this location a perfect
place to hear from the public. We are highly involved with our
African American brother and sisters in the Consolidated District
Association of Kentucky Baptists as well as with our white brother
and sisters in the Northern Kentucky Baptist Association.
Doctrine
Ninth Street Baptist is a
fundamental conservation church using the New Hampshire Confession
of Faith (1853) as a statement of our beliefs and practices.
(A Copy is available to any that make a request.) We adhere to
"Close Communion" as a means of celebrating the Lord's Supper.
Only those that are members of the church are to participate in this
ordinance.
Beyond that, we believe the
God loves the sinner while hating the sin (Romans 5:8.) With
this in mind, we reach out to all persons regardless of their
practices in life with the message of God's love. We cannot
support a lifestyle that is contrary to the teachings of the bible
and out of our love for all, share the message that God is not
pleased and will not accept a worldly lifestyle. Any behavior
that is abusive to the body (The Temple of God), homosexuality in
any of its forms, gambling, adultery bearing false information in
any form, the notions of same-sex marriage or unions are all
unacceptable according to God's Word. Any person that has
parented a child is encouraged to accept their full responsibility
for the nurturing of their children and rearing them in the
reverence of God by word and example.
We receive any that desire to
be a part of out family. Persons wanting to be a member of
this congregation will be accepted by Baptism after confession of
faith in Jesus Christ as Lord of their life or by letter from a
church of like faith. We do not practice "Christian
Experience" except when the former church no longer exists and there
is proof of membership in a church of like faith.
It is our belief that all
persons have a calling and a ministry to fulfill. However,
there is no Biblical support for having women in the preaching
ministry. There is enough to do for all of us not to have this
as a point of contention
